Chapter 7 - Round and round we go
“...It’s in realism mode.”
The walkie-talkie cuts off, and Sinuyan is left with a crackle and snap from the device in his hands that he clutches onto tightly. Jeb begins crying all over again, banging on the door which Fire tries to stop to avoid injury. “Jeb, Je- JEB!” Fire persuades as she grabs onto Jeb’s arm like a mother trying to stop their child from hurting themselves. Jeb sighs and walks away from the door, now banging her head against the wall. Sinu shakes his head. “Okay guys, look. We need to think about this, we need a plan. Where are we? What map is it?”
“Map… Hmm…” Brian mumbles as he looks around the room.
“Ow, ow, ow.” Jeb repeats, her head getting sore. Fire rolls her eyes and places her hand between Jeb’s head and the wall, Jeb continuing to move her head back and forth, hitting Fire’s hand but not too hard that it hurts. Sinu scratches his chin as he tries to focus on his surroundings. There’s broken workbenches and rusty tools hanging on the walls. “I’ve played this game a million times over but... actually, I don’t know where we are.”
“Oh come on, we got put into a new map?” Brian looks up at the ceiling and asks, “How is this going to help??”
“Let’s just not focus on it too much. Get what you need and let’s head out before more zombies collect themselves outside.” Brian tries to get the group together. Fire groans and tries to comfort Jeb as she loads up. “Hey, Jeb. If we make it through this then just think, we won’t be going through another game that has versus. Don’t worry!”
Jeb sighs and backs away from the wall, her forehead red from where she kept on hitting the wall. “O-Okay.” She takes a big deep breath in and, just like that, Fire can immediately see the determination in her eyes and on her face as she walks over to the table in the corner of the room. The table has guns, med kits, and all sorts of ammo.
There’s a few melee weapons as well. Sinu puts his hand over the weapons before anyone can even touch them. “Alright. First we need to sort these out correctly. We need a sniper, warrior, scout, and a mixed fighter. Sniper will be away from the action and will be taking down any zombies that decide to surprise us. Warrior will be melee and strong close range, they’ll be in the action a lot. Mixed is between warrior and sniper, just so that the warrior isn’t on his own. Scout obviously scouts out the area, and is always on watch.” Sinu looks down at the range of weapons and starts assigning everyone their roles.
Passing Jeb a hunting rifle and two pistols, he states, “Jeb, you’re the scout. You’re small and more agile, so you should be perfect for this. You are also very vigilant and observant, use that to your advantage.” Jeb nods and picks up a pipe bomb from one of the cupboards, as well as a health kit. Sinu then passes Fire a hunting rifle and magnum. “Here, you’re sniper. Make sure no one gets jumped on. If a special infected arrives, you gotta be on them in less than a second.” Fire nods, assertive to her new role.
Lastly, Sinu walks over to Brian and passes him a katana and two pistols. “Here, you’re melee. Good luck! You’ll do fine, Brian. You’re strong and you won’t be completely alone. I’ll be mixed, since I’m more experienced.” Sinu takes for himself a rapid firing silenced submachine gun as well as two pistols. After everyone takes a med kit and a bomb of their own appeal, Sinu walks towards the iron door that has a bar on it to avoid any accidental opens. He takes the bar off, the Yans behind him waiting in anticipation.
“Sinu, Do the special infected revive?” Jeb asks quietly.
Sinu looks down. “They shouldn’t, but in this game...” He trails off, not wanting his full answer to be heard. He looks outside for a moment before opening the door, immediately backing away with the rest of the Yans as they fire towards the horde of zombies wanting to get in. It’s loud and the ringing of the echo in the room doesn’t help. After a good fifteen seconds, most of the zombies are cleared out, a huge pile of dead on the pavement. Intestines, teeth and flabs of skin are scattered around the rotten bodies. “Ugh. That smell…” Fire pinches her nose and looks down, avoiding looking at the quite unusual and disturbing sight. Jeb, the first to move, slowly and uneasily treads past them, as she looks around she’s suddenly interrupted by her tendril that flops onto her shoulder.
She looks at it and smiles. “Oh, hey little guy!”
Brian walks over to Jeb, katana in hand. “Are you talking to your tendril?”
“Uh… Yeah? You got a problem with that?”
“Uh, no... Nevermind I asked!” Brian shakes his head, shaking the odd scene off as he walks forward. Jeb suddenly springs up, remembering her role as scout. She immediately stretches her legs for a few seconds before dashing around the place, knowing off experience to not start running if the muscles aren’t warmed up first. The Yans appear to be in an expanse of asphalt, with broken-down airplanes scattered throughout. On their right, there are numerous large buildings, probably the main buildings. Jeb smiles, her love for planes kicking in. “Oh. My. Gosh! Look at all those planes! I wonder if my favourite Boeing is in that cuddle of planes somewhere,” she mutters as she walks towards the nearest plane, resting her hand on the cold metal.
The plane doesn’t seem familiar but it’s certainly amazing in Jeb’s eyes. The reflection and the white glossy paint, however stained from the zombie apocalypse, still amazes her. It’s not a giant passenger plane but a small, four to six passenger plane. She tries to climb up onto the wing, heaving herself up onto it which easily holds her light weight. Jeb looks around. “Where on Earth do we go?”
Fire bites her lip and looks around. Through the whole minute of looking around, she’s remained near the shed’s door, looking here and there for any zombies. Jeb points to the left, where the flock of planes are. “Guys! There’s something over there! Lights, a big jet. It’s on. Maybe we’re supposed to get into that?” Jeb looks over to the others to see what they think. Sinu runs over to the plane Jeb is standing on, he squints but he can’t look past any of the planes ahead. “I can’t see past the planes, but I’ll trust that you know what you’re doing. Everyone, follow Jeb. How far is it?”
Jeb tilts her head, as if doing it will help her think. “Hm, I’d say about… less than an hour walk.”
“Any zombies?”
“Yeah, heaps, but we can take care of them. Also if Fire is the sniper, she should be plane hopping right now.”
“Plane hopping??” Fire questions. “No! I can’t jump from plane to plane! I’ll fall and break something.”
“Uh, fine. I have a sniping rifle anyway so it should be fine if I take the role as overhead sniper.” Jeb takes a deep breath and sighs as she carefully treads onto the other wing, and jumps over the small gap between the two wings of the next plane over. With a big thud, she makes it onto the larger wing of the next plane. “Ha, easy!” With confidence, Jeb starts running along the planes, looking out for anything of interest. Sinuyan, Brian and Fire slowly follows behind, not as enthusiastic being down on the ground. Ten minutes in, and it’s still remarkably quiet, not having seen any zombies since when they first exited the tool shed. Jeb’s plane hopping has moved onto much bigger planes, or as she likes to call them, “Big Boeings.”
Fire suddenly squeals. “Jeb, look out!” Sinu and Brian’s attention is now drawn to Jeb. Jeb looks behind her to see a mass of zombies on and around the plans she’s just jumped from. They look towards her hungrily. They remain still though, other than their usual wobbling and the occasional toppling. One of the zombies spits out what looks like a lung, Jeb feeling sick to her stomach. “Oh my gosh…” Jeb looks away, the smell of blood and rotting flesh not pleasant. Fire gets her hunting rifle ready. Jeb tries to recollect her thoughts, knowing what she has to do. Despite it being a game, she still can’t feel as though this is somehow real as she turns to face the horde of zombies waiting to strike. She readies her rifle, looking through the scope she aims and fires, blowing a bullet right through one of the zombie’s heads.
With a loud roar, it seems to cue the zombies as they let out a spine shivering scream, all of them running towards the Yans. Jeb keeps her rifle aimed on the horde, backing away more and more as she commands, “Shoot, shoot!”
“Jeb! Watch i-” Fire tries to warn, but she’s suddenly jumped by a zombie. Brian acts quickly, dashing towards Fire with the katana in hand, slicing away any real dangers to Fire and surrounding. Guts and blood scatter to the ground, getting onto both Fire’s and Brian’s clothing. The two are too caught up in the battle to even react to the mess on them.
As Jeb continues to shoot at the zombies in front of her, she feels her body being pulled down. She takes her eyes out of the scope and looks around, not knowing at what part of the plane she ended up at. She finds herself too close to the edge of the nose of the plane, and slips and falls off. She screams and hits the floor, right on her back, yelping and wincing from the pain. Sinu gasps, “Oh my God, are you okay Jeb?” Sinu rushes over to Jeb’s side, Fire and Brian defending them as the zombies get closer and closer. Sinu groans. “Uh… uhhh...! I don’t know what to do! You might have a back injury and moving you would make it worse!”
“Just pick me up dammit!” Jeb yells. “I-I’m fine, just get me on my damn feet.”
Sinu seems a little surprised from the snap but helps her up. She is barely able to keep her balance, but luckily it seems no damage was done to her other than feeling quite winded.
Not missing a beat, Jeb continues to fire each zombie coming ahead. Sinu realises that she’s quite fine, and resumes shooting zombies. He points the nozzle of his submachine gun to the crowd of hungry feasters. His gun is loud but effective as each zombie drops like flies, creating a lump of bodies that the zombies need to climb over. Jeb smiles. “Heh, easy!”
Fire shrieks. Jeb groans and looks over to her, Jeb immediately regretting her immature and disrespectful noise as she witnesses Fire being pummeled to the ground by a charger, then being picked up and slammed over and over against one of the nearby planes.
Jeb readies her rifle and aims towards the charger. The charger stops and looks over to Jeb. Through the scope, Jeb is horrified as she sees Torrie’s face on the charger, her body deformed severely, eyes sort of droopy and mouth always open. Jeb winces at the sight of her friend being in such a painful looking state. Although knowing who the charger is, it doesn’t prevent Jeb from firing straight at Torrie’s head. Jeb starts crying loudly as she hears the thud of both Fire and Torrie dropping to the ground, blood splattered on the now red-white paint of the plane. Sinu remains concentrated on the horde, not wanting to know what’s going on behind him as he starts to clear up the last of the threatening zombies.
“Torrie…” Jeb sobs harder and drops to the floor, head on her knees, rifle left on the ground. Brian runs over to Fire immediately and checks her for wounds. Fire is traumatized and bruised all over. Luckily the plane didn’t have thick metal, otherwise the injuries would be much worse. That, as well as not being pummeled into the ground. Fire screams as Brian tries to slip her out of the chargers’ dead grip. Brian immediately stops trying to move her.
“I’m so sorry!” Sinu places his hand on Jeb’s shoulder. “I’m sorry. You had to. It was quick, okay? She wouldn’t have felt a thing.”
“I-It’s like she had no emotions at all though… She looked terrifying.” Jeb whimpers and wipes the tears off her cheeks.
Brian backs away a little as Fire spits out some blood. “Oh God, no. Don’t do this. Not already. Please!” Fire struggles to even move a finger as she remains on the cold ground. Sinu runs over to the two, examining Fire carefully. “Fire, where does it hurt?”
“M-My chest!!” She screams out and struggles to breathe, coughing and spluttering out more blood.
Brian cringes and gets up, pacing back and forth as he starts worrying and panicking. “Okay, Fire. You can heal. Right? Can you heal yourself?”
Fire slowly lifts up her head and looks down at her hands, she rests one painfully on her chest and tries to focus, a blue aura appearing from her palms.
Her scrunched up face releases a little, appearing more relaxed as the aura appears to help with the pain. “We have med kits but… They won’t fix what I think you have, Fire. I’m sorry. but you’re going to have to heal yourself. Brian will carry you, can you still shoot at all?”
“I-I guess...”
Brian follows orders and picks up Fire easily, not minding the blood from her clothing rubbing off on his. Sinu glances over to Jeb, still on the ground but now with her head down between her knees, her arms hooked around her shins. He sighs and walks over to her to comfort her. She hears him coming over and looks up at him.
“Why!! Why do I have to murder people!? I’m a damn Christian! I can’t do this…” She looks back and chokes up. Sinu can’t do anything but remain standing over her, wondering what to say or what to do. “Jeb, I understand...”
“No! You don’t understand!! I mean, I never really liked Torrie when we first met but… she’s not a bad person. I didn’t want to kill anyone. Why me… Why me… Why me…” She repeats over and over. Brian walks over to Jeb, Fire in his arms remaining quite peaceful as the blue aura continues to relax her.
Jeb starts almost hyperventilating as her wailing starts to impede her breathing. Sinu sighs, “Jeb, calm down, please. We won’t be able to get through this if you’re not helping out. We’ve already got Fire down, we can’t have another.” Sinu can hear the effort in Jeb’s gasping as she tries to stop, unfortunately her hyperventilating has left her with the annoying side effect that acts sort of like hiccups where every few seconds she takes a sudden, deep breath in.
Sinu doesn’t mind it though, as long as she is making an effort to get her act together. “God forgive me.” She mutters as she picks up her rifle and starts climbing back up onto the plane, doing everything she can to not think of the murder. They start walking on again, the Yans still on high alert. Over time Brian notices Fire beginning to slowly regain her strength as she is able to hold her rifle in her hand independently and flawlessly. Someone finally speaks. “It’s quiet,” Fire mumbles.
“Are we there yet, Jeb?” Sinu asks, kicking rocks while trudging along. “It’s been an hour since we left the start point.”
Jeb is too involved in her own thoughts to answer, but luckily Brian juts in.
“I think that’s the plane we’re looking for, right up ahead. The one that looks alone.”
“That’s great! My feet were getting tired.”
Brian gives Sinu a look. “YOU think your feet are tired? I’ve been carrying Fire most of the way!”
“Alright, fine, both our feet hurt,” Sinu says jokingly. He jogs on over to the plane ahead of the rest of the group.
It appears to be a small private jet with the door wide open. He notices the dead man in the pilot seat, gun in hand. Despite the appearance, Sinu tries his best to ignore it, not wanting to ruin the mood. Jeb, Brian and Fire reach the plane. Brian sets Fire down in one of the seats. “Wow!” Brian looks at all the lit-up controls on the front dashboard. “Does it really work?” Brian smiles.
“There’s got to be a twist.” Everyone turns around in shock at Jeb’s first words since her traumatising experience earlier. “The pilot wouldn’t shoot himself if he knew the plane was working fine.” Jeb bites her lip.
“What must be wrong?” Fire asks.
Sinuyan thoroughly examines the plane’s dash, looking for anything that could tell them why the plane was going unused. Finally, he sees a blinking light with the words, “refill gasoline.” He shows it to the rest of the group.
“It’s run out of fuel??” Jeb groans and places her hands on her head, looking around.
“Can’t we just get some out of the planes nearby?” Fire suggests, now able to stand. She stumbles a little but regains her balance very quickly.
“With what tool?” Brian asks.
Jeb thinks for a moment. “I know!” Jeb jumps out of the plane. “We suck it out!”
“Jeb. Jeb, just… think about what you just said.” Sinu facepalms. “That’s kind of really inefficient.”
“And not healthy?” Fire laughs.
“Noooo, dummies! Not just straight out of the tank. We get a tube or pipe of some sort. There’s got to be one in the plain somewhere.”
Sinu nods. “Well, that was my first plan of action. I’ll go look. You guys are on guard, okay?” He stares at the Yans, making sure they heard exactly what he said before venturing into the plane.
Fire stands on watch, Jeb sweeping around the area as Brian relaxes a little after carrying Fire for so long, his arms quite sore. Fire points to the horizon. “Guys, look!”
Their attentions points towards the sun that is no longer present in the sky, the ground blanketed in a sheet of darkness. They can see a zombie horde, approaching very, very fast. A familiar voice is heard from the top of the plane, near the front, and the Yans turn to face the source. It’s Dani, a disgusting acid looking substance oozing out of her broken jaw. A spitter. Her body is in an extremely messy state with blood, dirt and mud all over her clothing that is torn and ripped. Jeb shrieks. “Get back!” Fire attempts to aim, but isn’t quick enough, as Dani opens her mouth wide, almost a whole 180 degrees, spitting out from her throat.
It lands directly in front of the plane entrance, the spit settling around the entire vehicle and a little bit more. Brian looks out, about to step out he notices the spit. “Oh my God.” He retreats back into the plane.
“Fire! Get back!” Jeb yells, Fire looking away from the scope to see the pool of spit nipping at her feet. She jumps back, falling over onto the ground as she shrieks from fright. Brian swears. “This is not good.”
Sinu returns from his scavenging. “Jeb, catch this!” He throws the long black tube from his hand as well as a transparent container. The container makes it past the spit but the tube, not designed for throwing, lands straight in the pool of the bright green acid. Sinu tries not to swear as he equips his submachine gun and points it towards Dani. “I’m so so sorry…” He mutters as he lets out a long rapid streamline of bullets, looking away to not see the damage done, just hoping he didn’t cause too much pain.
Jeb looks away as well, forced to look at the horde of zombies getting closer and closer. Dani’s blown body falls off the plane and hits the ground, dead. Brian stands near the edge of the pool, eyeing the tube in the acid. Fire shouts, “Are you crazy?? Don’t go get it!”
“Fire, we don’t have time! I need to get it!”
“No! Saving you is worth more than saving time!” It’s too late, Brian dashes towards the tube in the pile of spit. Fire looks away in horror, and turns back just seconds after to Brian appearing right next to her. She is startled. “What the heck!? You were just… You… Oh great. I’m hallucinating.”
Brian looks down at himself. “Then that makes two of us.” Brian then remembers something. “I think I’ve found what my cancer does.” He runs towards the nearest plane, running at the speed of a car… literally, running so fast that he avoided the spit acid and managed to get to the nearest plane in half a second.
Fire gasps in amazement. “Go Brian!” She cheers, getting out her rifle to help Jeb clear out the zombies ahead. Jeb and Fire smile at each other and continue to fire among the line of the dead. The acid spit is cleared by this point, and Sinu boards the plane, joining Fire in her cheering, “Go Brian!”. A loud roar is heard, rather closely, grabbing each Yans’ attention, including Brian, even though he is quite a bit away from the rest of the group. Jeb looks around. “Oh my gosh, Sinu! Look out!”
Sinu casts his attention to a big figure in the corner of his eye. A huge rock of cement is flying at the plane from the side. Sinu retreats into the back of the plane, the plane thrust harshly to the side with a great loud bang. Fire gets thrown from the plane’s entrance, landing near Jeb.
“Ack! Oh no, oh no, oh no. Don’t flip the plane!” Sinu begs. Jeb looks towards the tank zombie. It’s Sam, his face on the tank’s huge body. He doesn’t look in pain though, although he looks emotionally traumatized, a sad expression written all over him. Jeb readies her rifle and immediately shoots at Sam. She misses his head, firing at his chest. Sam is backed up a little but his body completely ignores the wound as he starts running towards Jeb and Fire. They shriek and start running. With the tank distracted Brian runs back to the plane, the transparent liquid container already full.
Brian walks over to the side of the plane and starts pouring the fuel into the plane. Sinu rushes him, “Come on, come on, come on! Why can’t gravity be faster than you right now??”
Brian laughs. “I wish that too.” Jeb shoots at the tank every so often, trying to weaken Sam, but he continues chasing after her and Fire. Brian yells, “Done! Sinu, start it up!”
“Alright!” Sinu drags the dead pilot out and starts flicking random switches until he hears the engine turn on. He laughs nervously as he accidentally turns the headlights on and the light that indicates that the plane is about to crash. Sinu then groans as he continues trying to search for the one switch he wishes for.
“Hurry up!” Jeb urges, suddenly tripping and falling to the ground. The horde of zombies arrive, Sam rushing over to Jeb who remains defenseless on the ground. She screams and points the nozzle of her rifle into Sam’s mouth. She fires. Sam groans in pain and backs off. The mass amount of zombies crowd around Fire, who’s now surrounded as well. Fire takes out her magnum and shoots as many of the zombies as she can, but more and more appear. Brian notices the panic around him. “Oh no. Please no.” At lightning speed he shoves zombies to the ground and squeezes over to where Fire is, wielding his katana, protecting her while she, in turn, protects him.
Sam shakes his head repeatedly, trying to regain his focus. A loud screech is heard. “Oh what now!?” Brian yells. Jeb screams as she feels a large weight land on top of her, air being forced out of her lungs. She looks up at the object. It’s Seth, a hunter. A tear rolls down Jeb’s cheek. “S-Seth…”
Seth doesn’t attack immediately, he looks down at his girlfriend, his face full of anger, it seems. “You’re not Seth… but you are… but… Seth is never angry.” Jeb sobs loudly. “NEVER.” She screams, slightly confusing Seth with her sudden outburst.
With a lot of the surrounding zombies cleared, Brian and Fire make it to the plane just as the engine roars into life. “Yes!!” Sinu exclaims. “Get in!” He beckons the two. Jeb is stuck under the weight of her boyfriend, unable to move. Sam charges towards the plane. “JEB!” Fire shrieks, about to get out of the plane but Brian keeps her back. “Sinu, we got to go.”
Sinu looks down, shakes his head and starts driving the plane forward. Jeb cries loudly, vaguely aware that she is being left behind.
She strokes Seth’s cheek and begs for mercy. “P-Please… You don’t have to do this. We can stay right here. P-Please…” Seth is still listening, though Jeb isn’t sure if he’s actually listening to her words. Jeb gently pulls Seth closer to her, kissing his lips that taste of blood and rotten flesh. Sam continues to chase after the plane, but it gets faster and faster. “Come on, Sinu! We need to get off the ground, NOW.”
Sinu panics, muttering out random half-words that no one understands.
The plane starts to lift off the ground. Brian closes the plane door, taking one last glance at Jeb, who won’t be making it onto the plane. Sam, only a metre behind the plane, tries to punch the tail. It misses, but only barely, and the wind difference causes the plane to swerve sharply. Fire, Brian and Sinu are thrown to the side brutally. Fire silently thanks Brian for closing the door. The plane continues to fly up into the air but at an odd angle, turning as soon as it’s in the air. Sinu tries to regain control as fast as he can, managing to finally get the plane on a straight path into the sky. Sam roars loudly as he tries to throw a few chunks of cement at the plane, but it doesn’t reach even half the distance.
“Why hasn’t the level finished?” Sinu panics. “Why aren’t we back?”
“Oh no… This isn’t the escape route. This is just a way out. We’re not even half way through. It’s only just the beginning.” Brian sighs. Sinu looks straight ahead at the clouds in front of him, gripping the handles tightly, mentally preparing for whatever is coming next.
“Seth…” Jeb whispers. “I love you…” She cries loudly. “You’re going to kill me. But you’ll be alive. You’re in pain, aren’t you?” The hunter doesn’t answer. “You poor thing. Just kill me, please. I can’t see you in pain. I can’t.” Seth looks down at her stomach and presses his claws against her clothing. Jeb winces hard as his claws dig into her flesh. Crying out in pain, her flesh is torn open, bones are ripped out of her, organs squashed, and a pool of blood surrounds her. “STOP. PLEASE. NO, PLEASE!!” She begs. Seth, taken aback, stops with her broken off ribs beside him, and strands of flesh all over her.
“PLEASE!!” She screams again. Seth presses his claws against her beating heart, the sound comforting to him somehow. The Seth inside the hunter knows that his girlfriend still loves him, no matter what. That he has a girlfriend who loves him despite the pain he’s caused her. A tear drips down his cheek as he thrusts his claw into her heart. “PLEA-” her one last scream is cut off.
